Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

For over 10 years now I have been addicted to playing video games. I’ve recently taken up playing Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, thanks to my fiancé who recently got it for his birthday.

I’ll tell you how my addiction to video games all began…

I used to play some video games when I was younger. I had a Sega Mega Drive; Sega Genesis to all North American readers. I had games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Micro Machines and Castle of Illusion. I loved playing them, but I was never addicted.

This progressed to playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and WWF Attitude with my little brother. However, nothing had prepared me for what came next.

When I started going out with my fiancé in 2005, who played video games quite a lot, I was reluctant to play many with Tony Hawk’s being the only games I’d play. I think it was that I always believed I wouldn’t be good at playing them and I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of my fiancé. I know we were best friends but we had only been in a romantic relationship for a week or two. Although, now he’s seen me in a morning when I’ve first woken up, hair all a mess and makeup down my face from the day before; he’s seen me last thing at night so tired I can’t keep my eyes open; he’s seen me be so accident prone I’ve got bruises on my arms and legs and huge lumps on my hand… I think we are past the embarrassment stage now.

Well…he kind of tricked me into playing Final Fantasy X. He asked me to just run over to a save point and save his game while he was out of the room, but said I may come across some enemies on the way and he left me to it. From then on, I was hooked! If I remember correctly, I wouldn’t even pass him the control back once he had returned.

I’m thankful for what he did because here I am today, playing video games I would never have expected myself to play… and not to blow my own trumpet (no pun intended if you’ve read my 25 Random Facts About Me post)… but I actually think I’m doing pretty good! I share use of my fiancés PlayStation 4…

Which brings me to the actual reason I started this post, which was to write about Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.

As I said at the beginning of the post, my fiancé recently got this game for his birthday. He kept saying how much he thought I’d like to play, but as usual, I was reluctant to play for various reasons…

The first reason being the online side of the game. I’d never been a big fan of online gaming, although I have played a little on DC Universe Online. I think it was really because of I like to take my own pace in games and I really was sceptical of using microphones to communicate with other players. Fortunately, you don’t need to communicate in that way if you don’t want to and you can turn off voice chat from other players.

My second reason for being a bit sceptical to try the game was the view. As I watched my fiancé play the game I noticed that he was playing in first person view and I don’t usually like that view. The only game I play with the first person view is Call Of Duty when my fiancé and I play team deathmatch against each other. However, you can alter the view from first person to third person view and everything in between! But in all honesty, since I’ve been playing I actually prefer the first person view. I usually like to see my surroundings better and if any enemies are behind me, but I personally found the third person view harder to control.

I haven’t been playing it very long and am only currently level 9 with my character but I’m really enjoying it. The character I made is the Wood Elf race but there are other variants to choose from; such as Argonian, Breton, High Elf, Dark Elf, Nord, Orc, Khajiit, Redguard and Imperial. Imperial is only accessible via the crown store in-game or buying the imperial edition.

You can also choose which magic class you play as… with this I chose Templar, but you can also choose Dragon Knight, Sorcerer, Nightblade.

There are a variety of different quests you can do, but you don’t have to follow them. You can explore without doing quests, but both my fiancé and I have found that we gain more experience from doing quests rather than focusing on exploring and fighting random enemies. The game uses a colour coded system to show whether you are a high enough level to do the quests easy. The colour coding system also passes over to the types of items you can find, showing which items are better.

You can also join groups and guilds with other players. I’m currently part of a guild called the Alliance of the Wolf… Okay, fair enough, the guild was created by my fiancé so it was pretty easy to get invited to a guild and promoted.

Honestly, the map on this game is very vast and I’ve only explored a very small amount. I started in the area Auridon and have just travelled to Khenarthi’s Roost… Not really a lot of exploring yet, but like I say I’m only level 9.

I’ve really enjoyed playing the game and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a game similar. I was very skeptical but its one of the best games I’ve played recently.
