July Business Showcase | Moonstone Metals

I interviewed Tammy Cowan, aged 35 from Torrington, Wyoming USA. Tammy owns Moonstone Metals by Tammy.

Tammy made this small statement to briefly describe her business:
“I make chainmail and wire wrap jewelry at this time. I’m looking to expand into flatware jewelry using spoons and forks to make bracelets, ring and pendants. I also have a little rock fetish. I’d love to use the river rocks I’ve collected in more of my pieces”

Here is my interview with Tammy…

When did you start your business?
It all started with my mom. About 5 years ago we were in a local craft store which is a very bad thing for the two of us to get together a do. She’s the shopper and I’m always looking to try new hobbies and crafts. We were looking around and found some chainmail kits and stone beads. It looked like a fun afternoon project. The necklace turned out better than I expected and I caught the bug. It became my new hobby. I keep playing and experimenting make different jewelry that of course my mom kept confiscating. I’ve made things for friends and family over the years but just recently within the last year decided to make a go at turning it into a small business.

What made you decide to setup your business?
My two year old son is my inspiration. I want him to know you can do what you love in life with a little determination if you’re willing to work hard to make it happen.

What do you do and what products do you sell?
I make jewelry that I hope people will feel spoiled to get and have. When I have a customer that is looking for a customized piece I work with them to do my best at bring what they invasion into reality.

What products seem to be your best sellers?
My chainmail pieces are the most popular.

Who are your biggest competitors?
There are a lot of amazing and talented jewelry designers out there. The competition seems overwhelming at times but it inspires me to keep working on the quality of my work and the service I provide.

How do you advertise your business?
I some of my pieces in a local shop Cherylmaines. The owner Cheryl is a wonderful woman who has helped me spread the word. I also have an incredibly talented friend Cas that takes photos for me. She shows off some of my jewelry in person and on her facebook page Cas’s Photography. I myself post links and ads on facebook, Instagram and in the teams on Etsy.

How would you recommend your business to potential customers?
I love working with people to create something they will cherish for a long time to come. Working together to design and create custom pieces they are proud to wear. I want to do my best to make every customer happy. I love each opportunity to be tested.

Did you have any problems when starting your business? If so, how did you overcome them?
Starting a business is a lot of work and long hours. Plenty of people are going to do and say things to try and discourage you. There is so much to learn and lots of mistakes to fix. The best thing I can say is stay determined if you want it to happen bad enough you’ll do everything and anything to make it happen. Keep trying new things and learning as much as you can. There are a lot of potholes on the road to success but if you don’t give up then in my opinion you’ve already succeeded. I’m still very new to all this, I am definitely no expert but I found in life in general a good attitude goes a long way to help create a good outcome. Do you recruit? If so, what are the benefits? I don’t at this time.

How do you decide on your designs?
Most of the time I just start playing around and see what comes out. If a customer wants a custom piece I set down with them and get as much direction as I can to insure it turns out to be what they are expecting.

What has been your favourite piece to work on?
I made this bracelet for a lady that wanted to do something with the pieces from her wedding goblet for an anniversary gift to give to her wife. It was my first custom piece and my stomach was full of butterflies being nervous on how she would react to the finished bracelet. It was a lot of fun to work on and made me feel incredibly good she was happy and excited with how it came out.

Are there any offers on your products running at the moment?
I am running a grand opening sale throughout June. 10% off when you spend $25 or more with the coupon code NEWSHOP and daily specials are added in periodically. Just watch the shop announcement for the code.

What has the experience of owning a business been like for you?
Fun, scary, exciting, overwhelming, stressful but overall one of the most wonderful and satisfying things I’ve ever done.
